About the Project:

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the surge in fitness app usage has been undeniable. Notably, Les Mills experienced a remarkable 900% increase in new sign-ups for its On-Demand workouts in January 2020. This trend is reflective of a broader movement toward convenient, at-home exercise solutions. While the accessibility of comprehensive workouts via mobile applications is undeniably beneficial, it has become apparent that existing platforms harbor certain limitations. A primary concern lies in the one-size-fits-all nature of the content, potentially causing frustration or even harm if a workout doesn't align with an individual's unique needs. This poses a compelling challenge: How can a fitness app, designed for widespread use, offer personalized, user-centric exercise content?

This case study delves into the quest for solutions within the context of yoga-specific workouts, as exemplified by the innovative UNIQ app.

Problems:

  • How can we promote physical well-being by incorporating mental health practices into fitness routines?

  • In what ways can we implement a hands-free control system during workouts to allow yogis to fully focus on their practice?

  • How might we craft tailored virtual yoga experiences that cater to the specific needs of individual yogis?

  • How can we recreate the serene ambiance of a yoga studio in a virtual setting?

  • How might we foster connections among yogis within the digital realm?

Solution:

UNIQ - Tailored Yoga for You

UNIQ stands out by offering both premade and customizable workout flows that cater to the unique needs of its users. Recognizing that user needs extend beyond the workout content to basic app controls and navigation, UNIQ introduces a groundbreaking hands-free control option. This feature directly addresses feedback from user interviews and usability testing, where users expressed that manually adjusting settings detracted from their yoga flow experience. UNIQ eliminates this issue by empowering users to control the app through vocal commands.

Process Overview:

Embarking on this journey, my role involved conducting initial research to glean insights crucial for subsequent user-focused investigations. Interviewing a diverse group of 5 yogis with varying skill levels, I identified three key areas of focus:

  • -Physical App Interaction: Understanding how users interact with the app physically and addressing pain points.

  • -Short Attention Span: Recognizing the need for engaging content to sustain interest throughout the workout.

  • -Unique and Customizable Practice: Acknowledging the diversity of user needs and the importance of tailoring experiences.

Synthesizing these insights, I translated them into the design and development of wireframes and high-fidelity mockups for the UNIQ app platform. Following this, the app underwent rigorous user testing, leading to further refinements and enhancements based on user feedback. This iterative process ensured that UNIQ truly resonates with the unique requirements of its user base.
