TYR: An internal app to enhance an entire company’s performance

TYR is a commodity trading company dedicated to buying and selling products such as organic food, wood, grains, and more. It operates throughout the USA as well as regions of Canada and Europe. Their team is composed mainly of traders that manage product purchasing and logistics, and also administrative professionals in charge of invoicing and other financial activities.

In order to manage the company's different transactions and keep information centralized, one of TYR's co-founders, Fredrik Eriksson, built a system based on a tabular format technology a few years back. For some time, this home-made, manual platform was enough to manage the business processes, however, with time, it became incompatible with the business’ growth.

First of all, the user experience needed improvement in order to represent the different user types within TYR. Also, the system was an on-premise software that required new users to download the program and run it locally using a VPN, which is a more complex process, especially for non-technical and distributed users. The need for rebuilding the software as a cloud-based solution and elevating its UX was latent.

Building a new platform while preserving the essence of the operative processes

The first stage of this project was dedicated to deeply comprehending TYR's business. Our UX team conducted interviews with users and stakeholders in order to reach a profound understanding of this business’ particularities and their employees' different necessities.

At the same time, developers started working on the system's architecture and defining its structure, making decisions on how the different functionalities should be implemented in a sustainable and reusable way. For this initial phase, and throughout the whole product development, it was of the essence that our team could access the existing system and conduct different tests and evaluations.

Moving forward, designers started working on wireframes and also took some time to validate those with real users before polishing them up in final mockups. As the design system evolved, so did the product's first version, and in a few months we were ready to launch the MVP.
