The problem with trying to illustrate the consequences of climate change is that it can often be overly simplified and grim, which results in it being experienced as some kind of moralistic reprimand. I wanted to make an illustration that could at first provoke curiosity in the viewer, so that the picture is read slowly, and at the same time acknowledge the problem we all experience with changing our consumer behaviour. I also wanted to suggest something of the perverse attraction of the spectacle of climate change that people can experience. Simply put, the illustration had to have appeal, a richness in detail, and a complexity in subject matter that could still be understood by the viewer.
