Photoshopped Light Fixture

Product finishes can be discontinued, make a comeback, or need an update. When the consistency of a product’s position and lighting are crucial to maintaining brand standards, photo manipulation may be the only option for creating new images.

In this case, the company discontinued this 24.5″ crystal chandelier in its highly reflective silver finish. As the product had five other finishes still active, the company needed a replacement image for the brand’s website. With a major redesign of the site displaying all fixtures on a black background, the Creative Director chose the white finish of this particular model to be used as the default image.

The difficulty in this project was navigating the complex, reflective surface of the intricate crystal chandelier. After a couple of brief experiments to determine the best approach, I decided to use vector paths to separate the various elements and Layer Styles to create the 3D-looking white finish.

This resulted in a file that was 1) scalable and non-destructive; 2) consistent in lighting; and 3) easy to edit in the future. My direct manager on this project expressed multiple times how impressed he was by the end results.

The light fixture in the white finish is currently featured on the updated brand’s website.
