artists as clients are sensitive about details, if not more than you, so you also have to be empathic about how they see the whole project.

Design

Why didn't the group choose a simple cms platform to make a website?

Well first they were looking into the future and how they might use the website more than just a portfolio type of web in the future, so they wanted control and being unique at the same time, and they were right according to the upcoming pandemic.
