The Lovers - Stop Motion Experimental short

“The Lovers” is an animated poem about new romantic relationships. The euphoric feeling of falling in love and the disturbing fear of losing control of one’s life and identity while melting into each other. The video art film came to life as a series of experiments with watercolors and ice, drawing and filling customized molds with water and dye.

I directed this film, during the first months of my new relationship. I had some aspirations to catch my memories from this period. Like my lover's skin in the darkness when we had our first sex - small and personal details like that.

I started with some watercolor drawings inspired by Gustav Klimt's and Egon Shile's works about physicality and sexuality. I loved these first results, but I felt that I had to include some ungovernable technique for honest reflection of love feelings. After many experiments drawing on different surfaces, I tried drawing on ice and felt I could find what I needed.

The sensitive and disturbing sound was written by Nitzan Vardi – a music artist, with whom I had already worked together. She gave my animation the most beautiful and fitting voice, something as fickle as melting ice.

Now my dream is to let our animated poem meet viewers all over the world.
