The first recorded match took place in 1646, and by the 18th century, cricket had become a prominent sport with organized leagues and clubs.

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), established in 1787, played a significant role in shaping the modern game. The MCC formulated the Laws of Cricket, which remain the foundation of the sport to this day. These laws standardized the rules, equipment, and playing conditions, providing a framework for cricket's development.

Cricket spread beyond England during the 18th and 19th centuries due to British colonization and trade. It gained popularity in countries like India, Australia, South Africa, and the West Indies. The first international cricket match occurred in 1877 when Australia played against England, marking the birth of Test cricket, the longest and most traditional format of the game.
