Gymly App Design

Hello my name is Travis Allen and I'm a product designer from Sacramento, CA! You're currently checking out my case study for Gymly which I worked on from ideation and design to finished prototype, with research provided by the company. The goal of this product is to help gyms retain their members by helping them build healthy habits and eventually reach the lofty goals they set for themselves.

This app features:

  • Fitness programs. Planning a workout can be overwhelming for newcomers who feel lost and long time members.

  • Reward system for checking into the gym and/or completing goals

  • Activity and progress tracking

  • Healthy lifestyle "instagram-like" stories that can include company deals, healthy recipes, meditations, stretches, trainer tips and more

  • Quick QR code check in. No more flimsy keychain tags.

Research

All research provided by Gymly and can be seen below. The biggest pain points for us are gyms retaining memberships and users building healthy habits. Gym members often have ambitious goals, but very few actually feel empowered to reach them. There a plenty of obstacles in users going to the gym habitually such as work/life balance and planning. A lot of gym goers are unsure of where to even start.

The K.P.I.'s of this project are to measure:

  • The number of check-ins

  • Active weekly users

  • The number of cancellations

  • The number of reservations

We want this product to help build healthy habits which will help gyms retain members in the long run. We also want the product to be as easy to use as possible, that was all the user has to do is show up.

User Persona

The pain points and collective research was used to create a user persona. This user is one of the many types of people we want to help build healthy habits. Someone who is too busy, unsure of what to do, and struggles to stay motivated. This helped with the decision making with the hierarchy of the home page, and what the main features offered in the product are.

Inspiration

We're not trying to reinvent the wheel here, this design is all about efficiency and results. Here's a few noteworthy inspiration examples (like Paceline's great reward system) that played into the final product.

User Flow

Wireframes

Not a lot changed in these wireframes to the final designs. The navigation bar and a few other changes were slimmed down to focus more on content. We want to get as much details set in the sign up phase so the app can offer the best experience to the user. Our main highlight is the rewards and progress at the forefront of the home screen. This is followed by the users next planned work out so they don't feel lost or unsure at the gym. A QR code check in for the gym to track (and the user doesn't need the flimsy key chain code most gyms have!). Our activities screen is a much more detailed look of the home screen, while our program page is lead by visuals with details below.

Visual Designs

A minimal navigation and top bar was chosen in these designs to show as much "content" as possible without feeling too clunky. Onboarding is sleek, detailed and quick. Bold colors are used to highlight the rewards and activity, while the rest of design is a smooth black and white to make the content stand out.

The homepage provides your next workout, current progress, and lifestyle tips/company deals (need new shoes or a healthy cookie recipe?!) all one click away. Quickly check in to your gym with a QR code or discover new workout programs for newbies and advanced lifters. Get badges, build up streaks and level up to track progress and redeem rewards.

UI Library

Here is the library and components used to create the app, however the main colors could/should be changed to match the clients branding.

Conclusion

My personal favorite part of this design process was coming up creative and efficient solutions. The key features here are true win-wins for members and the gyms themselves. A product that newcomers and long time gym goers could use daily. Gyms can track their user check-ins, how busy the gym is, and more. The best way gyms can get people to come back in is to make it as easy as possible and stress free for users. Rewarding users for their hard work has also proven to motivate.
