Greek Myth: Medusa

Medusa was originally the most attractive woman in ancient Greece with many people commenting on her beauty. Poseidon raped her in Athena's temple and in her fury the latter transformed Medusa into a Gorgon so that no one would ever look at her again and if they did, they would turn to stone. Some versions of the stories gave Medusa a snakelike tail.
