🏴☠️ The Narentines were known as the Pirates of the Adriatic.
This South Slavic tribe occupied an area of southern Dalmatia centered at the river Neretva (Narenta) in the 9th and 10th centuries.
🛶 The Narentines were fierce enemies of Venice. They would attack the Republic’s merchants and raid close to the city, even managing to defeat the “doge” several times.
Eventually, the tribe was defeated in a Venetian crackdown, disappearing from sources by the 11th century.
🌊 It’s hard to say whether my family is related to the Narentines, but it has been living on the river Neretva for over 500 years.
Even today, when I look through the window, I get to admire this fast, sparkling, emerald-colored river whose upper course is the coldest in the world.
