I want to share my last year's project about the default avatar. The default avatar is a zero state for both new and existing users before they choose an avatar for their favorite beneficiaries.

I was expected to make the default avatar looks friendly and welcoming ଘ(੭ˊᵕˋ)੭

In the early phase, the requirement for the default avatar is to be gender-neutral. Shall represent both male and female attributes which I thought was really challenging. One of the feasible approaches was to use hairstyles that appeal to both attributes, later the feel didn't come as I intended to.

My team and I were hesitant that the gender-neutral avatar will encourage the users to feel unbothered in changing them to other looks.

Actually, we were also thinking that the gender-neutral avatar might be another section itself; maybe in addition to some occult like alien, furry, or else (just throwing some crazy ideas here). For that reason, we drop off the hairstyle concept (or no hair at all - the one who looks like the hitman).

Then, we tried some alternatives from simple icons to... some cats. Several moments later, with many iterations back and forth, we go with the one with the big white smile 😃

Moving forward, we picked the color of blue monotone and take off the eyes.

As we were taking into the deep point, the big smile mouth concept evolve from a simple white smile into more range of various options. Unfortunately, we can only pick one that we think will be proper for any users.
