Sandman Motel Poster

For those of us who remember the Sandman Motel & Restaurant (where BankCorp South now stands on Hwy 51), it was an iconic mid-century era motor lodge and restaurant, owned by the Mitchell family and managed by Dot Mitchell. It was open from February 1964 to the summer of 2001 when it was torn down to make way for BankCorp South. The Sandman featured a colorful neon sign that had a man in a nightcap tossing sand out of his hand to draw in motorists with the promise of a good nights sleep. It had a restaurant, well known for its homemade salad dressing, and antique shop that Dot Mitchell ran. The restaurant was a location for the 1994 movie The Client starring Tommy Lee Jones and Susan Sarandon. The Client was a movie adaptation of the best selling John Grisham novel. I designed this poster as a way of remembering the motel and keeping its history alive. 18 x 24 two-color screen print on French Parch-Tone paper. Printing by Native Screen Print, Orlando, Florida.
