The Eastern Box Turtle

One of my favorite turtles, The Eastern Box Turtle has such brilliant color. I love that the turtle can just retreat back into his shell when he needs to, wearing his shell as armor. This portrait was displayed at The Phillips Collection Staff Exhibition in Washington D.C. in 2013. Colored pencil on Bristol paper. 8"x10".
