tumblr app icon design

I had a lot of fun redesigning the Tumblr app icon! I couldn't decide between two ideas.

Some keywords stuck out to me in Tumblr's description: "effervescent" and "old internet." I used these ideas to come up with a general feeling and mood for the icon: fun and energetic with a vintage flair.

Idea One:

I designed a little character based on the space between the letters "t" and "r." I felt like these letters were the most prominent in "tumblr." I decided to use this character in the app icon by having it and the letters 'tumbling' across the icon.

Idea Two:

In this version, I wanted to retain the idea of having the different letters tumbling across the icon. I fit each letter in a kind of square/rectangular shape. I also decided to emphasize the "t" by making it a serif font, Neuton, rather than the bubbly sans serif font I chose for the other letters.

I'm really happy with the way the icons came out! I think they captured the kind of energetic vintage feeling I was hoping to find. I think the icons give an old video game impression. Let me know what you think!
