Taylor Swift Fan Art Project: A Midnight Story Told Through Art
We created and sent too many sketches, drafts, and final versions of our customers' images and wrote articles that we can't count anymore. Now, it's time to start a new chapter and reach a wider audience. It's Covatar's pilot story, and it's all about Taylor Swift's 13 eras from our artists' pens and perspective.
Midnight #1: Taylor Swift aka Debut
Is a heartbroken teenager ruling the country industry? It seems like a joke if you'd ask the record labels that turned Taylor Swift down. Taylor went through rejections before a record label signed her. She was just 14 years old when she was signed.
"I wanted to capture the innocence of Taylor Swift in her debut to stardom Taylor Swift, one of her most underrated albums." – Kordari from Covatar.
Midnight #2: Fearless (Original version)
After the success of her debut and while opening for Brad Paisley's concert tour, Taylor wrote the title track, "Fearless," which influenced the direction of her sophomore album. If Taylor wrote "Fearless" while on tour, she wrote "You Belong With Me" after overhearing one of her bandmates speak to his unsympathetic girlfriend over the phone. It shows that Taylor can make music anywhere and draw inspiration from anyone!
"I loved this album, so I created this artwork to be relatable, like what Taylor Swift did with her songs - full of sparkles yet still feels as human as possible." – Sima from Covatar.
Midnight #3: Speak Now
After being a country superstar and well-known for her narrative lyrics, Taylor was again subjected to media attention and criticism. They pointed out that only her exes (lover, friend, or enemy) were the subjects of her songwriting. She shut them down by writing Speak Now ALONE and the shady song "MEAN" as a clap back. She's insanely talented and savage, right?
"Speak Now is Taylor Swift's giant leap to a mature perspective in her journey as an artist; here, she's already a full-grown woman, unlike where she was in her previous albums." – Meomur from Covatar.
Midnight #4: Red (Original version)
As a Covatar artist, I can relate to Taylor in that emotions drive someone's creativity, and heartbreaks motivate an artist to pour his heart and soul into his passion. After being on a roll for her first three releases, Taylor experienced her biggest heartbreak yet; from tears being shed, she was able to write Red.
"I wanted to display the album's autumnal theme and some of its most memorable lyrics, such as the plaid shirt, scarf, and red lipstick." – Afi from Covatar.
Midnight #5: 1989
Critics once again doubted Taylor for experimenting with the pop and country genre with Red. Taylor agreed to a certain extent and believed that Red did not win Album of the Year at the Grammys due to the jury being confused about whether it was a pop or a country album. So what did Taylor do? She went into full pop and released 1989, named after her birth year. The album became a pop BIBLE!
"As a tribute to the snaked-themed album, I created Reputation's artwork as Taylor's emotional bite back against her oppressors." - Solleos.
Midnight #6: Reputation
Going on hiatus after her feuds with Kanye West, Kim Kardashian-West, and Katy Perry, Taylor archived all of her social media posts before surprising the public with Reputation. She recorded the album with her co-producers in small studios in Atlanta, Brooklyn, and California to keep it a secret.
"As a tribute to the snaked-themed album, I created Reputation's artwork as Taylor's emotional bite back against her oppressors." – Solleos from Covatar.
Midnight #7: Lover
After her blackout period and releasing vengeful bops, Taylor turned things around and gave us a lighter album in Lover. Making amends with some of her celebrity feuds and meeting her now longtime boyfriend, actor Joe Alwyn, Taylor released Lover to write a timeless song that would serve as a love letter to love itself, hence the title track.
"Colorful, full of life and love - that's Lover! I wanted to show that in this artwork with Taylor singing, full of energy." – Stacy.
Midnight #8: Folklore
The pandemic separated the entire population, but that didn't stop Taylor from giving us yet another masterpiece. Canceling her "Lover Fest" tour, Taylor wrote and produced Folklore while in quarantine. She experimented yet again and went alternative this time, deviated from her usual personal lyrics, and included fictional narratives and characters in poetic lyricism for Folklore.
"Folklore is like a breath of fresh air - a trip to the rolling fields while watching the river flow." – Laura from Covatar.
Midnight #9: Evermore
Who knew that albums have sisters, too? That's what is Evermore to Folklore! Like Folklore, Evermore was a surprise album released less than a year after its "sister" record, sharing a similar tone, lyricism, and theme with its predecessor.
"Evermore gives me that wintry feeling, keeping myself snuggled up and warm in a cottage somewhere in the forest." – Anna from Covatar.
Midnight #10: Fearless (Taylor's version)
The world knows what Taylor fought for to reclaim the ownership of her masters; fellow artists such as Kelly Clarkson advised her to re-record her entire catalog, saying that she'll earn even more in the process. And that's what she did! Fearless (Taylor's Version) is Taylor Swift's 1st re-recorded album.
Midnight #11: Red (Taylor's version)
Fans debating and easter eggs popping in and out, what will be the next re-recorded album of Taylor Swift? In the end, Red (Taylor's Version) won! It is Taylor Swift's 2nd re-recorded album.
"I displayed Taylor's nostalgia in this artwork. Looking back, the past doesn't hurt her anymore; instead, she's enjoying the autumn wind, while rocking her iconic scarf and red lipstick." – Laura from Covatar.
Midnight #12: 1989 (Taylor's version)
Two successful re-recorded albums, what's next for Taylor Swift? Even though 1989 (Taylor's Version) is yet-to-be-released due to a copyright claim against "Shake It Off," this didn't stop Taylor from re-recording the album's other songs. Movies and TV series used 1989's re-recorded songs for their soundtrack.
"I created this artwork to recreate the easy-breezy vibes of the first two re-recorded songs from 1989 (Taylor's Version)." – Pony from Covatar.
Midnight #13: Midnights
With Swifties anticipating Taylor's Version of Speak Now and 1989, Taylor surprised them when she announced her 10th studio album instead, Midnights, at the MTV VMAs last August upon accepting her Best Video award for '"All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor's Version)."
"I wanted to show my admiration for Taylor's melancholic electric blue eyes in this Midnights cover shoot artwork." – Filkit from Covatar.
