Project Goals

  • Streamline app, focusing on 'most used' features.

  • Increase accessibility

Problem

After a user survey, it was revealed that the two most common drivers for opening the Starbucks app are to:

1.) Scan your Starbucks card to pay for an order in person.

2.) Place an order in advance.

However, the first things you are presented with on the homepage of the app are your points summary and a list of drink offers. You must perform additional actions / clicks to access the card for payment or to order a drink.

Current homepage on iOS app:

Solution One

I moved the card carousel to the home page so that you can easily scan your card and go.

Now, immediately upon opening the app you also know whether or not you have enough money or points to pay for your drink.

Solution Two

I kept the 'Favorites' quick order functionality on the homepage, seen here as 'Your Usuals' but made it slightly smaller to allow for more than one option. I also changed the colors and added an 'order' button, to make it more clear for those with vision issues, what action you're being asked to perform to add your drink.

Now, with only a few taps you can order your most craved drinks quickly right from the homepage.

Final thoughts

The Starbucks app is deceptively complex, providing users with an easy way to order and pay for a large variety of highly customized drinks from their phone.

The designers did a wonderful job building a product that makes this process seem simple from the users perspective. Because of that, I did not make significant changes to the user flow.

However, I think that the proposed changes to the homepage would provide the users with an improved experience, reducing the barrier even further between them and ordering their favorite drinks.

Design Elements

Thanks Starbucks for keeping me productive!
