Kite: Correctional Services App

kiteapppreview

3 week project: prototyped with Figma, usability testing with Maze.

Outcome

A modern design solution to serve the communication needs of the incarcerated and their loved ones.

Problem

Providers of telecommunications services to prisons have secured contracts worth $1.6b but have not yet developed seamless design solutions that enhance the communication experience for incarcerated individuals and their loved ones.

Role

  • UX Research

  • Content Strategy

  • Information Architecture

  • Visual Design

Approach

Reimagining communication for the incarcerated by collaborating with their friends and family to deliver a solution with true user value.

Discover

Discovery is all about conducting user research to gather data and generate insights to inform design decisions.

Through research, I wanted to:

  • Identify user needs and mobile application expectations

  • Understand user traits, demographics, characteristics, and underlying motivations

  • Identify prison telecommunications service pain points and opportunities for improvement

Methods:

  • Competitive Analysis

  • User Survey

  • User Interviews

  • Personas

  • User Stories

Define

I focused on reeling in my ideas based on the research that I had previously conducted to brainstorm and identify key problems to solve that would eventually be implemented in my sketching and wireframing.

Methods:

  • User Stories

  • Sketches

  • User Flows

  • Sitemap

  • Wireframes

Develop

IMO developing is the most exciting phase because I was able to open my mind to the infinite possibilities regarding branding, iterative prototyping, and user testing and breathe life into my design.

Methods:

  • Branding

  • High-Fidelity Prototype

  • User Testing

Learnings

  • A walk-through tutorial or hover labels (feedback) for each button may be beneficial.

  • Technical difficulties when conducting unmoderated usability testing can happen. When in doubt, continue testing!

  • Conduct another sprint to iterate and continue moderated usability testing.

  • Be wary of scope creep! Hone in on one or two features and test thoroughly before adding more features.
