Rollo - Dog Walking App

Role: UX Research, UI Design

Timeline: 2 months | Tools: Figma, FigJam

This case study was completed as part of Dribbble's Product Design Course. The assignment was to create a fictional dog walking app that will help understand the basic building blocks of product design. We were given a project brief, weekly check-ins and brainstorming sessions. I am solely responsible for the entire design process from start to finish.

Problem

Solution

It is important to establish a successful exchange by building trust and credibility.

Rollo is a mobile app that was created to connect dog owners with dog walkers. Primarily, to help the owners trust their dogs are in safe hands. The goal is to help owners connect with a trustworthy walker to rely on their services when in need.

Design Process

Research & Empathize

To understand the practices of the products in the existing market, I conducted market research by doing a competitor's analysis and selected three leading dog walking apps: Wag!, HoliDog and Trusted House Sitters. I paid attention to the common and highlighted features as well as design.

Next, to understand the experience and pain points of the users, I interviewed two dog owners to find out if they had any experiences or concerns about using dog walking apps when friends and family were not available. This led to identifying several pain points.

• One had not tried apps because they didn't know about these services and expressed concern about trustworthiness.

• The other said they would be more comfortable having a way to view their pets in real time while they are away. Also, that their pet and potential dog walker meet for a chemistry test prior to booking.

Persona

Based on all the feedback, I created a user persona.

Userflow

The below image exhibits the initial Signup and Log in flow.

Wireframes

Low Fidelity

I used FigJam to create the sketches for the different app screens.

Mid fidelity wireframes were developed in Figma.

I created simple wireframes based on the user flow to see if the placement looked user friendly.

Visual Design

My initial step was to create a mood board that would influence and set the tone for the design exploration.

Key words that influenced the design were, Fun, Friendly, Inviting and Trust. Ultimately, settling with yellow as the primary and the cool tone blue and silver as accents.

Conclusion

This entire process was a great building block on my path as a product designer. It was an incredible experience building a case study for this application. Not only was this a process of learning design principles, but also learning how to effectively use a tool like Figma. Being able to utilize the essential steps of the design process was transformational.

Conducting a user interview was extremely helpful in understanding the product from a different perspective. Translating that information into design and business goals is a key piece of the process. I look forward to further building my skills and keep iterating on my designs.

If I could change anything, I would conduct a few more interviews to gain more information about potential users and translate that into a well-rounded persona. Also, I would create a few more screens within the input and filtering areas of the design flow.

My goal was to establish UX and UI fundamentals and implement that into purposeful visual design. Overall, I am very pleased where Rollo ended up.

Thank you!
