Once Upon a Rhyme

The Challenge

Epworth Preparatory school developed a theatrical production titled Once Upon a Rhyme in early 2022, where the characters adapted classic fairy tales into modernised versions.

The brief was to illustrate a poster design for the show that marries this classic storytelling with a modern style.

Inspiration

All projects begin with an idea but are inspired by the ideas of others. So before I embarked on the initial development of the design, I started with what I felt would be a worthwhile direction to head in.

To begin, I started with typography.

From there, I moved onto overall layout and frame design.

Sketches

One can spend an eternity looking for what has been and what could be, but eventually, the show must begin.

And so, I began with my sketches.

Final Design

Now that sketches had been confirmed and laid out as best as possible, I hunkered down and began with vectoring. Slowly but surely putting everything together and culminating in what I believe was a vision accomplished.

Of course, I have to single out the title; hand-crafted from scratch to fit perfectly between each letter.

Curtain Close

Overall, I’m very happy with how this project came together in the end. From the beginning, it was a concept I knew was going to be both challenging and exciting, simultaneously. And that’s exactly what it was.

Thank you, Epworth, for another grateful opportunity to work together.
