Pride in History: The Black Cat

On New Years Eve of 1966 on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, patrons at the Black Cat gathered to celebrate the new year. The Black Cat is a gay bar nestled on Sunset Boulevard in the district of Silver Lake was a haven for queer people at the time.

As patrons kissed at the stroke of midnight to ring in the new year, several plain-clothes officers revealed themselves and began to attack those at the bar. As the crowd was consumed by chaos, LAPD officers continued to assault and drag people from the bar through the parking lot — arresting many of them. Their crime? Being gay.
