Upstox: Indian trading platform

Excited to share what we’ve been up to with our favourite friends in India: Upstox. Upstox is on a mission to empower Indians, of any background, to build and maintain their personal wealth.

Already a successful trading app in India, the Upstox team came to MetaLab with big expansion plans and a desire to win on experience. 

Building a trading app for the Indian market is very different from building for Western countries. We began our partnership with a trip to Mumbai to meet the Upstox team and get to know the customer a bit better.

There we found 3 main insights:

• Indians tend to have a much higher financial literacy than North American countries

• Stock trading there is done almost entirely via mobile apps

• Many Upstox users were using the app all day in moments between their day job as a second source of income

For MetaLab, this presented UX challenges to make trading lightning fast on mobile, to make a mobile experience handle the amount of detailed information these users wanted, and to educate users to be mindful of their trading risk and performance.In the end, we helped ship native mobile apps for both Android and Apple, a web-based desktop application, a marketing site, product vision, and an entirely new visual brand.  

The foundation for all of our work was a coded multi-platform design system that was created in close collaboration between our design and engineering teams. A project of this scale requires a large team. Over the course of two years, over 20 members of the MetaLab team got into the tools to help ship Upstox.
