Defeated Lettering

Rejected (defeated, if you will) lettering for a project I'm in the early stages of. I personally liked where this sketch was headed so I decided to digitize it and make some subtle changes in Illustrator. I think I'll hang on to it. Any thoughts or critiques? How can I make this better?
