Union redesign
While clever designers and writers can simplify forms somewhat by cutting unimportant fields, in many cases long forms are essential and unavoidable. Cognitive load and psychology is key.
There are some design patterns you can use to make long forms easier to complete.
- Try breaking the form into small sections on several sequential pages with a progress indicator
- Avoid placeholder text. Designers like placeholder text because it eliminates visual clutter. But placeholder text causes many usability problems, and is best avoided.
- When you progress to next section, keep previous section open and easy to access if applicant needs to go back or review what they've written
- Visually group related labels and fields
- Provide highly visible and specific error messages.
