Underwater Cutout
During his last years of life, Matisse could no longer hold a brush in his hand due to a paralysing disability. Due to this limitation, he started cutting coloured papers with a pair of scissors, and started “painting” that way. I was always struck by the interesting shapes and colours of the Matisse cutouts period, but seeing them in person made me want to do the same thing, because they just look so fun. It's remarkable how a physical limitation was turned into something of beauty for everyone's delight. ✂️📃🐠
