I was tasked with designing an intuitive and engaging in-app rating system for the BLACK app, our tax filing application. This feature was critical for gathering user feedback and enhancing the overall user experience.

Project overview

Following the successful release of the BLACK app, we identified the need for a seamless in-app rating system. This system was essential to:

  • Capture user feedback directly within the app

  • Understand user satisfaction and areas needing improvement

  • Enhance user engagement and retention by making users feel their opinions are valued

Design goals

  • User engagement: Create a design that encourages users to provide ratings and feedback

  • Simplicity and clarity: Ensure the rating process is straightforward and easy to understand

  • Feedback utilization: Collect valuable insights that can help improve the app

Custom illustrations

To enhance the user experience and add a personal touch, I designed all the illustrations used in the in-app rating system. These illustrations played a key role in:

  • Engaging users: Visually appealing illustrations made the rating prompts more engaging and enjoyable for users

  • Simplifying communication: Clear and friendly visuals helped communicate messages effectively, ensuring users understood each step of the rating process

  • Building brand identity: Consistent and custom illustrations strengthened the app's brand identity and provided a cohesive visual experience

Outcome

The in-app rating system for the BLACK app successfully met its design goals, providing a user-friendly way to gather valuable feedback and nudge users to rate the app externally. Here are some key outcomes related to the rating system:

  1. User feedback integration: The system effectively nudged users to provide ratings on the Google Play Store and iOS App Store through in-app prompts. This, combined with other continuous improvements and user feedback integration, significantly boosted the app's ratings to 4.9 on Android and from 4.7 on iOS

  2. Increased external ratings: The system effectively nudged users to provide ratings on the Google Play Store and iOS App Store through in-app prompts, significantly boosting the number of positive reviews

  3. Enhanced engagement: The rating system contributed to higher user engagement by making users feel heard and valued

  4. Continuous improvement: Insights gathered from the rating system enabled us to make iterative improvements, leading to a better user experience and higher satisfaction rates
