In the ballet, Mother Ginger appears during the Land of Sweets dances. She is a bit cheeky and dons an enormous oversized skirt from which eight little bonbons (four girls and four boys) come dancing out. The role is typically played by men, oftentimes because the costume can weigh over 100lbs.
