Red Dawn
In 1984, the movie "Red Dawn" made its debut and depicted a scenario in which a coalition of Soviet, Nicaraguan, and Cuban military forces invades the United States of America. This was about a year before the Geneva Summit, in which a critical meeting between Gorbachev and Reagan took place to foster diplomatic relations and to discus the ever escalating arms race. After watching the film, I remember being so disturbed by the possibility of seeing my loved ones being tortured and/or killed at the hands of a perceived enemy. I remember wondering whether or not I would have the courage to fight in the face of such overwhelming odds. Though we do not face a clearly defined threat presently, we do face many challenges and battles daily both individually and as a society. I hope that I can set an example for my children and teach them that the fight for what is objectively good, loving, and pure is always worth the sacrifice.
