Vector to Texture III

In 2019, I was invited to create a concept for a large-scale fiber installation to occupy a 22.5' x 15' x 12' space at Sweet Tooth Hotel, an immersive art space in Dallas, Texas. In addition to being a graphic designer and illustrator, I am also a fiber artist adept at transforming yarn from its string form into three-dimensional creatures, characters and objects that inspire the imagination and engage the senses. I employ many different methods in my artistic process, knitting, crochet and this body of work, which was made using the hand-tufting method. Hand-tufting is a manual way of making rugs.

This split-view, a portion of the lower right wall, shows the work from it's graphic inception to its final hand-tufted completion. The graphics were kept simple knowing that in its final form the textural aspects of the rugs would bring to the vectors their own unique light and shadow. The 48" x 48" flat rug panels were produced by hand using a rug tufting gun and tufting cloth on a frame, trimmed and edged with glue then finally, pieced together and permanently affixed to cover each wall top to bottom.

I oversaw this body of work from its concept to its completion, including creative direction, scope, objectives, budget, labor, logistics, engineering, builds and installation. Follow me on Instagram to see more of my design and process.
