MM Steve
Last one of the 6 portraits for mograph mentor :) Super fun drawing peers that I've met through the illustration world and/or followed for years.
Each time I draw likeness I get worried I won't be able to iconify and distill someones character into a simple set of shapes. It's something I would never recommend myself to be hired for, yet the more I do it the luckier I seem to get. I attached sketches to all of these portraits to show that they don't always start off looking like the subject, in some cases they don't look like it at all.
For me I typically write the things I see in a person before even drawing. I'll literally write things like, 'strong, beard, glasses, kind eyes, light hearted' and then I may even write under 'light hearted' something like 'maybe smiling or looking off camera'. I try to avoid drawing at all costs as an illustrator lol.
