The Discovery Phase by Carla Idrogo

How is UX & UI Design similar to Interior Design? There are a handful of correlations between the design process within these design professions. Every project requires learning different industries, meaning, internal & external business processes for product or service providers to serve a goal.

The Discovery phase is critical for the business understanding of — Why? Who? When? Where? How? What? It is unlikely one encountered every viable industry with familiarity with how they practice & what their customers want. I’ve faced a broad range of companies that specialize in R&D for Automotive or Aerospace, Online Banking, Digital Services Provider, Animation, and Multi-Family Production Home Builders. This means one must have comfort in ambiguity to dive in — listen, determine, and articulate problems along with the priorities of business — scope, schedule & budget.

Falling back on a design process rules the show. Seldom is the practice linear from A to Z. Yet, the experienced designer knows where and when you can overlap or reduce steps. Conversely, if steps are far too diminished, it is detrimental to the project. Click to see the Discovery phase similarities within these design professions.
