The 404

The notorious 404 error, "Not found" is often referred to as "the last page of the internet". It has become a meme and a punch line. The error has been printed in comics and on T-Shirts. However there are very mixed emotions about the 404 page and how it should be designed.

Robert Cailliau has been quoted saying " The sort of creativity that goes into 404 response pages is fairly useless." Despite his views companies have invested time and effort into creating clever, captivating pages for the user.

I targeted both the Central Park Zoo and the Museum of Modern Art and their current 404 pages perhaps needed a redesign. 404 pages will continue to divide opinions however personally, I appreciate a clever witty 404 page.
