A Living Hope
The hymn I Bind Unto Myself Today, ascribed to Saint Patrick, is a moving reminder of the power and hope of the Gospel in times of such duress and uncertainty. In the face of pestilence, that ancient enemy of mankind, we can sing the lyrics “I bind unto myself today the pow’r of God to hold and lead, His eye to watch, His might to stay, His ear to hearken to my need. The Wisdom of my God to teach, His hand to guide, His shield to ward; The word of God to give me speech, His heav’nly host to be my guard.”
In this Lenten season, on this St. Patrick’s Day, and in the thick of this globally shared experience of struggle against a near invisible foe, may Christian charity and love of neighbor abound. May we be humbled and reflect on the gift of life in the face of death. May we bind ourselves unto Him who is the source of all life and all hope.
